Thirst quenching refreshing watermelon strawberry smoothie for extra hot days or any time you need a breezy energizing beverage that deliciously lifts your spirits. No refined sweeteners or heavy ingredient, a simple squeeze of lime and zesty fresh ginger liven up the fruit flavors.

THE ULTIMATE SUMMER SMOOTHIE
Watermelon is the quintessential summer fruit. I love buying whole fresh watermelon and freezing some of it to use for smoothies or to have as a refreshing icy cold snack on its own. The flavor and texture of this smoothie is dominated by watermelon. The iciness of blended frozen watermelon gives it a slushy-like look and mouth feel. I love the way that fresh ginger and a little lime juice light up the fruit flavors.
HIGHT WATT BLENDER RECOMMENDED
You don’t necessarily need a high speed blender (1000 watts or more) to make this smoothie but you do need a decent amount of power to get the frozen fruit to break down. Also keep in mind that this recipe makes about 30 ounces (close to 0.9 liters) so if you want to use a smaller bullet type blender you’ll have to cut the quantities in half.
FREEZING WATERMELON
To freeze watermelon cut the red part of a seedless watermelon into 1 to 2 inch cubes, place them in a sealable plastic bag and freeze until solid (1 to 2 hours). In the past I’ve bought pre-cut watermelon that comes in a 12 ounce plastic container and placed the whole container in the freezer, but I only recommend doing this if you have a high speed blender because a solid block forms that can take more oomph to process. If you want to use watermelon with seed to make this smoothie, you should take all the seeds out before freezing it.
A QUICK EASY BLITZ
All the ingredients go into the blender at the same time. How long it takes to transform the ingredients into an icy smooth whipped up concoction will depend on the power of your blender. I have a high speed blender that gets everything whipped up in about 90 seconds.

GETTING MAXIMALIST
This is a fairly minimalist smoothie, but because I identify as a maximalist here are some suggestions for what you can add if you’re in the mood to be a little extra.
- Turmeric & Black Pepper: Turmeric has so many great health properties and its subtle flavor will fit right in with the rest of the ingredients in smoothies. Black pepper activates the turmeric, dramatically improving your body’s ability to absorb it. I recommend ½ to 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric and ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper.
- Ground Cardamom: The delicate floral taste of cardamom would be lovely in this smoothie. I recommend ½ teaspoon.
- Vanilla Extract: Creamy tasting vanilla accentuates the naturally sweet flavor of the fruit. I recommend ½ to 1 teaspoon.
- Fresh Mint for Garnish: The taste of fresh mint pairs beautifully with this smoothie. If you happen to have access to fresh mint, placing a spring of mint in each serving glass. I don’t recommend processing mint leaves into the smoothie because that would detract from the lovely pink color.
